The Monday Muse: Apocalypse Here!

I’m in an apocalyptic mood right now. Are you in an apocalyptic mood? I hope you are. Even if you aren’t, you have been. I guarantee it. Humans love explosions and mayhem. How else did Transformers 3 make more than 260 million dollars? Stoke your “fire-and-brimstone” mood right here on the Monday Muse.

SONGS OF THE WEEK…

Part of “Fields of the Pellenor” by Howard Shore

Okay, this is both the song and the gut-wrenching scene from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King where the Nazgul ride their Fell Beasts into Minas Tirith. If you can’t watch this and be seized by helpless awe and terror, you are simply not a human being.

“Requiem in D Minor, K. 626: 3. Sequentia: Lacrimosa” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Sweet. Mother. Of Pearl. I cannot listen to this song without feeling my heart rate jump through the roof. Every time that choir takes off I see flames, destruction, and poor, miserable sinners running with terror.

“Buckets for Bullet Wounds” by House of Heroes

This one might surprise you a little bit. It’s a rock song. But there is something about that guitar riff that bursts with angst and sin. The lyrics confirm it. “There are no handshakes / Only handguns / Only earthquakes!” This is going to be the theme song when that dark post-apocalyptic/dystopian future finally rolls in.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK…

“This is how the world ends

This is how the world ends

This is how the world ends

Not with a bang but a whimper.”

T.S. Eliot

About this point you should be ready to write that disaster novel where giant lightning bolts rain down from Jupiter and blow New York, Stockholm and Dubai to smoldering smithereens. Get your apocalypse on!
